Advice on Avoiding Run-in With a Bear

The start of spring also means the end of hibernation for bears – and the chance to come in contact with them. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is reminding homeowners that bears can easily be attracted to bird feeders, garbage cans, dumpsters and grills.Some tips to avoid a conflict with a bear:Take down bird feeders from April to NovemberKeep garbage cans inside until the morning of trash pick up Never overfill a dumpsterStore grills inside when you’re not using them.Last year game wardens received 870 bear-related complaints, about twice as many as the year before.For more information, log on to www.maine.gov/ifw.
