The man known as the North Pond Hermit who lived in the woods of Central Maine for 27 years told authorities he survived by breaking into area camps 40 times a year. Court documents say 47-year-old Christopher Knight was caught with stolen meat and other food in his backpack when he was arrested at Pine Tree Camp in Rome last week. Authorities dismantled Knight’s campsite Thursday. They found old game boys, televisions and watches among his possessions. Police say Knight triggered a motion detector at the Pine Tree Camp, which got the attention of a game warden who’d installed the devices.Court documents say Knight told a state police officer “over the years he had broken into the camp about 50 times.”He also admitted to four other burglaries in the area. Knight remains at the Kennebec County jail.
