Winslow Man Charged with Murder May Avoid Trial

A man from Winslow accused of fatally shooting another man outside a Waterville bar may try to settle his case without a trial. 30-year-old Matthew Partridge has pleaded not guilty to murder.Prosecutors say Partridge shot 26-year-old Justin Smith of China in the face with a handgun after a fight in December between two groups of men.It started inside “You Know Who’s Pub”, then spilled outside.Partridge’s lawyer says the shooting was a case of self-defense after Smith punched partridge in the face.In a court hearing Wednesday, lawyers for both sides worked in setting a date for a settlement conference, which would avoid a trial. Lawyer Pamela Ames says that could take place as soon as next month. Otherwise the case is tentatively set to go to trial in August.
