Teach-In Conference Held at UMaine

A Teach-In conference was held at UMaine on Sunday.The Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine held a conference titled “Budget, Why Not?” Topics varied from healthcare to student loan debt.Keynote speakers from a group called “It’s our economy” made the trip from D.C for the event.Activists came together to discuss issues affecting Mainers.Doug Allei, Education Coordinator for the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine and a Philosphy Professor at Umaine said, “When you see there’s all this positive energy and mutual empowerment, we can connect with eachother and support eachother. That’s the idea, we can make a difference.””It’s also important because we can organize,” added ‘It’s Our Economy Co-director Margaret Flowers. “At the national level it’s very difficult to achieve change right now. Our political process doesn’t really work in the interest of the people, but we can come together in our community and start to build these systems locally and that’s where our power is.”19 groups co-sponsored the event and 10 workshops were held giving everyone a chance to speak their mind.
