Hancock County Food Drive Looks for Last Minute Donations

A countywide food drive is starting to wind down, but collections will be accepted through next week.Over 120 businesses, schools, and churches are participating in this year’s Hancock County food drive.Since the beginning of March, community members have been collection non-perishable food items at drop off locations.Organizers hope to collect 10,000 food items. Companies like United Way of Maine and the Maine Community foundation have agreed to match up to $5,000 each for donation. The cash and food will be distributed to soup kitchens and pantries in need. Cooperative Extension Educator for UMaine, Marjorie Peronto said “March is a particularly dry month for food pantries. After the holidays are over and you aren’t really thinking about donating as much as we do at Thanksgiving or Christmas time, so it’s a good time for us to try to restore their shelves.”Wednesday, April 3rd is the last day for people to donate to local businesses. Then on Thursday, volunteers will sort and distribute the food to Hancock County pantries.
