State Budget Panel to Meet in Brewer

The Legislature’s Appropriations Committee is hitting the road this week as part of its budget-reviewing work. The committee will hold a public hearing on portions of Gov. Paul LePage’s budget in Brewer on Monday afternoon and evening. Lawmakers will hear testimony on the governor’s proposals affecting municipal revenue sharing, the Circuitbreaker and Homestead Exemption property tax relief programs, and the Business Equipment Tax Reimbursement and Business Equipment Tax Exemption programs. Senate President Justin Alfond of Portland says the governor’s $6.3 billion two-year budget will impact every corner of Maine. Alfond, a Democrat, says it’s very important that lawmakers are accessible to the public. Democrats say LePage’s budget shifts more than $400 million of the tax burden to local communities and their property taxpayers.
