Hancock County Kicks off 2nd Annual Food Drive 

The 2nd annual Hancock Countywide Food Drive starts this month.The kick-off event was held at the Friends and Family Market on Saturday.Over 20 towns across the county are participating in the food drive.The United Way of Eastern Maine and Maine Community Foundation are also matching a dollar for every donated food item.Family Assistance Advocate for the Washington-Hancock Community Agency Susan Farley said, “food pantries are saying they’re seeing big increases in numbers still. It’s been a tough winter and lots of people are struggling.”Jim Tintle, co-manager of Loaces and Fishes Food Pantry in Ellsworth, sees the need firsthand.”You never know, a week from now you could be in the same situation looking for food,” he said. “A lot of people come in and they never thought they’d be in that situation over the years and now they are.”Last year’s food drive collected over 7,000 items for the county’s 10 food pantries.For a list of drop-off locations, visit the Washington Hancock Community Agency’s website at
