Bangor Superintendent Briefs Committee on Governor’s Education Money Proposals

The Governor’s proposal to shift some of the cost of teacher retirements to local communities could weigh heavy on the Bangor school district. Superintendent Betsy Webb says Governor LePage’s plan would put half of the current $28.9 million state responsibility on local schools. Webb says, if enacted it would mean an additional $337,000 burden on Bangor taxpayers next school year. Webb plans to update school committee members Wednesday night on the impact of the governor’s plan, along with his proposal to cut $12.6 million in General Purpose Aid this year.Governor LePage also wants to push $18.5 million in funding meant for June into July.
