Bangor City Council Rejects Smoking Ban In Parks

A plan to ban tobacco products in Bangor’s public parks went up in smoke on Monday night. The city council voted 5-4 against a proposed ordinance that would have banned the use of tobacco products, outside of designated smoking areas. The Parks, Recreation, and Harbor Committee wanted an outright ban on tobacco products in parks. In October, they presented their draft ordinance to the Government Appropriations Committee, who amended the proposal to include designated smoking areas in 30 parks around the city. Some city counselors felt the law wasn’t realistically enforceable, and don’t expect the issue to be revisited anytime soon.
