Pro-choice advocates gathered at the state house Wednesday to mark the 40th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision.Several speakers talked about what life was like for women before the court’s ruling that legalized abortion. They also vowed to push back against any legislation that attempts to roll back abortion rights. “I think in Maine we have bipartisan support for reproductive freedom and the ACLU of Maine certainly works on those issues to make sure we continue to move forward,” said Jill Barkley of the ACLU of Maine. “We’ll see how this session works out. We know we’re committed, along with the choice coalition, to making sure we don’t take steps backwards.”Teresa Tumidajski of the Maine Right to Life Committee issued this statement: “We don’t consider this an anniversary, we consider this a memorial. We look forward to the day Roe v Wade is overturned and abortion is abolished just like slavery.”
