Maine Delegation Reacts to President Obama’s Gun Plan

Updated 2 years ago

U.S. Sen. Angus King and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter say they are pleased with President Barack Obama’s proposed gun control measures, but the Maine Gun Owners Association president says he has concerns. Obama on Wednesday proposed background checks and bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines like the ones used in the Newtown, Conn., school shooting. King says many of the proposals are “reasonable, prudent and represent concrete steps in the right direction.” U.S. Sen. Susan Collins says she’s disappointed that they do not include a national commission on violence to look at the root causes of violence in this country. Maine Gun Owners Association president Jeff Weinstein said a ban on assault weapons will likely lead to a ban on most semi-automatic rifles, including those used recreationally.
