Well-known Belfast Woman Dies in a Single Car Accident 

The wife of the former Belfast High School field hockey coach died Saturday morning after a car accident. Maine Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said Ruth Holmes, 64, was killed after her pickup truck slid off route 137 and struck a tree in Freedom.Her 11-year-old old granddaughter, who was in the truck at the time, was treated at a hospital in Belfast with minor injuries. A State Trooper said Holmes lost control of the truck on the ice covered road just after 7 a.m. Her husband, Allen, just retired last month as the Belfast High School field hockey coach, after serving as coach for 40 years.
