Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree is calling for a reinstatement of the ban on military-style assault weapons and other new federal gun control laws in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shooting. But the Portland Press Herald, reports that other members of Maine’s congressional delegation are being less specific about what if any changes are needed. A spokesman for U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said in a written statement that the Republican feels the nation must look at steps to control gun violence, while respecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners. Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud said in a statement that there will be time for discussion in the future, but now is not the time for politics. Sen.-elect Angus King, an independent, said Congress should take a closer look at assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition clips.
