A 17-year-old Oxford boy was killed when he fell through ice on Chapman Pond. Wardens say Joshua Wardwell was checking beaver traps Wednesday afternoon on the pond off of North Town Farm Road in Oxford when he fell through the ice. We’re told Wardwell’s 15-year-old girlfriend was on shore and saw Wardwell fall through the ice. Wardens say the girlfriend immediately called for emergency help. Members of the Oxford Fire Department got Wardwell out of the pond and life-saving measures were started. Wardwell was taken to Stevens Memorial Hospital in Norway where he was pronounced dead. Thin ice conditions are now present in Maine, and wardens are urging people to use extreme caution when attempting to cross any body of water where there’s ice.
