Maine Gay Marriage Law to Take Effect Dec. 29 

Same-sex couples will soon be able to receive a marriage license in Maine. The state’s new gay marriage law will take effect Saturday, December 29.According to the Secretary of State’s Office, the law is implemented 30 days after the governor certifies the elections results, which Gov. LePage signed off on last week.Voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington approved laws November 6 legalizing same-sex marriage. Gay marriage is already legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia.EqualityMaine spokesman David Farmer said it’s unclear exactly when couples will actually be able to exchange vows in Maine, since December 29 falls on a Saturday and it’s unknown if any municipal offices will be open that day to issue marriage licenses.
