Brewer City Council Approves Plan To Turn Old Middle School Into Senior Housing

The old Brewer Middle School is one step closer to becoming low-income senior housing.On Monday, the Brewer City Council authorized city manager Stephen M. Bost to sign an option and development agreement with the city’s housing authority.That enables the housing authority to move forward with the renovation plan. The property will cost the housing authority fifteen thousand dollars.They are applying for low-income tax credits through the Maine State Housing Authority.Then they need to pay for about five million dollars in renovations.The goal is to convert the building into 28 one-bedroom units for people 55 and older.Despite the costs, the housing authority is looking forward to giving this building a new way to serve its community.
