Demolition crews in Bangor are cleaning up a former laundromat. The former New Franklin Laundry building on Fern Street was demolished on Wednesday. The laundromat was a staple in the Bangor Community before it closed in 2000. Even Stephen King used to work there. When Kelly Realty bought the property 7 years ago, they planned to keep the original structure and build condominiums, but when the housing market fell though and the building deteriorated the realty company decided to build new homes on the land instead. Project Manager, David Kelly said “Really, we’re trying to go as far as we can toward net-zero energy, which basically means the homes will be producing as much or even more than they’re consuming through use of solar panels for electricity and solar water for hot water.”The company plans to start building six new homes next spring. The project manager says they will save bricks and lumber from the old laundromat to reuse for the construction project.
