The Boy Scouts of Troop 63 in Newport are sleeping out in the cold, all weekend long. They’ve set up a campsite in front of the Stop N’ Shop on Moosehead Trail. They’re doing it to raise money and food donations for the less fortunate in time for Thanksgiving. Items gathered will support the Newport Community Food BankIt is a program that scouts say inspires them, as they try to make a difference. This year the scouts of troop 63 in Newport want to double last year’s collection. It seems like a lofty goal but this group of scouts has raised the bar with donations the past couple years, and succeeded. They say their efforts help them realize what some of their neighbors endure. They happily bear the cold for the sake of supporting their community. In 2010 troop 62 collected 1,500 pounds of food. Last year they gathered 3,725 pounds.
