In an effort to help area food pantries get ready for Thanksgiving, a fundraiser was held Saturday in the Elm Plaza in Waterville. Some ladies got all dressed up for this Turkey Round-up.They’re pulling out all the stops to aid local food banks in Kennebec and Somerset County.”The food banks usually have a wholesaler that offers them turkeys at a reduced rate of about fifteen cents a pound, but this year they were contacted and told them that they weren’t able to do that,” said Wanda Steward of KVCAP.A setback that food banks and members of the community around Central Maine didn’t want to stop Thanksgiving meals going out to those in need.”A few of the food pantries called me, and were saying they were struggling and they didn’t know how they were going to get the group together and do a fundraiser and see if we can help raise the money for the turkeys for the food banks baskets,” said Steward.Wearing turkey costumes was one way to draw attention. They even brought “King” in on the action, who was happy to do his part.”It’s a great thing. They help lots of people through the winter and year-round,” said Al Penney, an Elvis impersonator. They want folks to know every bit counts.”It’s people helping people think that the big donations help the little donations help as well. It’s just a basic necessity. It’s something that no one should have to want for,” said Heather Marrow of KVCAP.”It’s very important and it’s very rewarding to us to know we can sit down on Thansgiving and say, ‘I just did 58 Thanksgiving baskets adn I hope they’re all enjoying them like I am right now,” said Cindy Fernald of the Vassalborro Food Pantry. For more information, or to make a donation, You can call Wanda Steward at KVCAP at 859-1542.
