American Legion Recognized by Bangor City Council

American Legion members, both past and present, were honored by the Bangor City Council Monday night.The men and women of Post 12 were recognized for their 92 years of service in the community. The servicemen and women also received awards from the U.S. congressional delegation and were presented awards on behalf of Senators Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Congressman Mike Michaud. Charles Birkel is a former post commander and current financial trustee for Post 12. He says the event is a great way to celebrate the efforts of those who served before, and hopefully inspire the future.”This was a great way to recognize the people who came before us and those who are here today. And if I might add, I hope that our young veterans, that we can recruit them for our future,” said Birkel. The legion is responsible for a number of charitable initiatives in the area including scholarship grants, donations to the boys and girl scouts, and improvements to public buildings.You can also be sure to spot them marching in local parades on 4th of July and Veterans Day.
