UMaine Football Falls To Albany In Home Opener

It’s been almost a year, but there was finally football in Orono tonight. The UMaine Black Bears hosting the Great Danes of Albany for their 2012 home opener. Two years ago, Albany beat Maine 3-0 in the season opener for the Black Bears, so UMaine was looking for a little revenge.It was misty at Alfond Stadium tonight, a little rain sprinkling on the players and fans in this one.The first half was a defensive battle. We’ll pick things up in the 2nd half. That’s when Maine gets on the board. Marcus Wasilewski fakes the handoff, rolls to his left, and then hits Damarr Aultman for the 19-yard touchdown to cut the Albany lead to 9-7 at the time.But on the ensuing drive, the Great Danes fool the Black Bear defensewith an end around, and Kevin Chillis has nothing but sideline in front of him. A 74-yard run to the end zone to immediately put the Great Danes back up 16-7.Maine would cut the score to 16-10, but a big play late in the 3rdgiving Albany another chance to score. Defensive back Darlos James is flagged for pass interference, helping the Great Danes score again. The Black Bears were flagged nine times in this game for 95 yards.Late in the 4th, the backbreaker. On 4th down, Albany’s Drew Smith gets the first down and more, a 27-yard run to the promiseland. The Great Danes go on to win this one tonight, 30-20.
