Brewer Planning Board Approves Fireworks Store, Despite Safety Concerns from Residents

The city of Brewer could be getting its first fireworks store. The city’s planning board unanimously approved a proposal Monday night to allow a 1,600 square foot building for retail fireworks on Wilson Street. The decision came after the board heard from two residents concerned about the traffic along that stretch of the street, which is close to the end of I-395. Both argued that turning left out of the proposed store’s parking lot was nearly impossible, as well as dangerous, due to the speed of traffic. The developer, Lovely Properties LLC, still has to get an entrance permit approved by the Maine Department of Transportation in order to begin construction. MDOT officials will look at how the developer plans to make room for entry into the parking lot from the street.Owner Greg Lovely told us he hopes to have the store open by the end of November.
