Turnpike Authority Approves Toll Hike
The Maine Turnpike Authority board has unanimously approved toll increases that’ll go into effect Nov. 1st on the 109-mile highway. The plan approved Thursday calls for cash toll increases of $1 at the York plaza and 50 cents at West Gardiner and New Gloucester plazas. Also, there are 50-cent increases for northbound traffic entering the turnpike in Wells and southbound traffic entering in Gray. Under the new rates, the cost of traveling the turnpike’s full length increases 40 percent, from $5 to $7. Maine E-ZPass rates will increase 1 cent per mile. It’s the first toll hike since 2009. Turnpike officials said the rate increases will bring in an additional $21.1 million in annual toll revenue, helping to cover the turnpike’s operating budget, maintenance and long-term debt service.
