Firefighters Making Progress in Wildfire Fight on Big Spencer Mountain
Crews are making good progress in a wildfire fight high up on Big Spencer Mountain near Greenville. Forest rangers say now that Sunday’s winds have died down, helicopters have been able to take 10 firefighters, 2 forest rangers and a medic up to the mountain. They also set up a 1,200 gallon portable water tank. The helicopters are dropping water into the tank and the firefighters are pumping it out. We’re told crews have cut a line around the fire, too, which is about an acre. They hope to call it contained by the end of the Monday, but it could take the rest of the week to put it out. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.Construction crews were working in the area before it started.
