Former Classmates Organize Fundraiser for Bangor Native Battling Cancer
It’s been more than three decades since the John Bapst Class of 1978 spent their days learning together in high school. But that doesn’t mean those classmates haven’t kept in touch.”We were a small class from that ’78 class, so we were all pretty close,” said Tim Higgins of Bangor.Years later, they’re still a big support system for one another.”We’re a very tight group. We hardly see each other, but when we do we pick up right where we left off and any of us would go to bat for any of our classmates,” said Tammy Davis of Brewer. These days, it’s not a class reunion bringing them together. It’s support for one of their classmates, Rodney Paulette, who is battling Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. “Somebody posted on our John Bapst 1978 Facebook page about Rod and his situation and Laurie and I called him up to reach out to him to see if there’s anything that we could do,” said Davis.Back in high school, Rod was a happy, healthy football star. Now, his classmates have worked together to organize a big spaghetti dinner to help him make ends meet.”Rod is a single father of 5, the 3 smallest ones live with him and he is unable to work because of his situation, so we’re reaching out and asking everyone to dig deep to help support Rod and his family,” said Davis.Kevin O’Connell of Bangor, a member of the Class of ’78 said, “Nothing brings people more together than a common cause and a common enemy. The common enemy is cancer as Tammy said, everyone’s been touched by cancer, and our common cause is our classmate Rod.”They’re hoping that common enemy of cancer might motivate those who don’t even know Rod to show their support too.The spaghetti dinner is Saturday, June 16 at 6:00 PM at the Bangor Elk’s Club on Odlin Road. There will be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction for items including a signed Jacoby Ellsbury uniform and a diamond ring. Donations of all amounts are encouraged at the door.
