Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Updated 2 years ago

An estimated 14,000 Mainers are victims of elder abuse every year. It ranges from financial exploitation to physical injury.Experts say all too often, older people are afraid to report abuse because those committing the crimes are either care givers or relatives.”And, it’s more complicated because that person who is abusing them is also responsible for their care. And so that adds an extra layer for the victim to say- I don’t want, I don’t have anybody who can take care of me, first of all, and secondly, if I do something to stop the abuse, I’m going to have to go into an institution, and I don’t want to do that.”If you are the victim of elder abuse or know someone who is, call the area agency on aging 1-877-ELDERS1, or legal services for the elderly at 1-800-750-5351.
