A man already serving a 45-year sentence for murder pleaded not guilty Tuesday in connection with last year’s beating death of another prisoner. 49-year-old Franklin Higgins is charged with two counts of aggravated attempted murder.Lloyd Millett, another inmate in the Maine State Prison, died last June.Higgins had been indicted for murder but prosecutors say an autopsy showed there may have been other contributing causes, so the charges were revised. Court paperwork says Higgins hit Millett in the head with a pipe clamp and that was a substantial step toward committing murder.Higgins is in prison for killing his girlfriend in Kenduskeag in 1999.
