MEA Votes to Support Same Sex Marriage

The Maine Education Association has voted to endorse the same-sex marriage proposal on the November ballot. The teachers’ union represents more than 24,000 active and retired members. Its endorsement was voted on last weekend at the MEA’s annual meeting. In response, Gov. Paul LePage sent a letter to MEA President Chris Galgay calling the endorsement an example of a “political game” the union likes to play.In his letter, LePage said the union focuses much of its efforts on political campaigns, lobbying, protecting bad teachers and providing skiing and golf discounts rather than improving the education of Maine children.Galgay was out of his office Friday afternoon and not availableto respond to LePage’s letter.
