Gay marriage supporter say President Barack Obama’s unequivocal support for gay marriage will help their campaign to bring same-sex marriage to Maine.David Farmer, spokesman for Mainers United for Marriage, said supporters hope that just as Obama changed his mind that Maine residents have changed their minds after repealing the state’s gay marriage law in 2009.Sara Jane Elliot of Scarborough, who hopes to wed her partner of 31 years, said “we have better-than-ever possibilities” in November when gay marriage is put to a second statewide vote.Obama declared his support for gay marriage Wednesday in an interview with ABC.Paul Madore, chairman of the No Special Rights political action committee, says Obama’s announcement is no surprise and that’s he putting “all of his chips on the table.”
