Governor’s Line-Item Vetoes Will Stand

Maine legislative Republicans have decided not to return to the State House this week to take up Governor Paul LePage’s line-item vetoes of two items in the state budget bill.Legislative officials said Tuesday evening that more than two-thirds of the Republican members of the House and Senate said they didn’t want to return this week when they were contacted by leaders.A majority of both parties must agree to take up a line-item veto if it is to be considered. It means LePage’s vetoes will stand.Lawmakers last week recessed until May 15, when they’ll return to complete business for the year.
