UMaine Student Art Project Is Also Social Experiment
In the 2007 film ” the Bucket List” two terminally ill men played by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman come up with a list of things they have to do before they die.A 19 year old Sophomore at UMaine is encouraging his fellow students to do something similar. This is part of an art project but also a social experiment.” I think emotions are a very big part of art,” said Bryan Bouchard of Levant. “And I thought the best way to create emotion in my art would be for the audience to make the art.”This project is not only going to help Bouchard make art in the form of an interactive movie, and complete a final project for his class, but he believes it is filling a larger need on campus. ” I think that people really are, they’re just waiting for an opportunity to come out and say what they want to, and say what they think, I think this is very helpful for helping people think a little bit about what they want to do.”The response has been great. As the chalkboard wall fills, the students are moving their thoughts to the brick wall. It’s prompted him to continue the wall past this project. ” Every semester I might do something like this and instead of a ‘Before I Die’ wall, I’ll end up making different prompts, perhaps a confession wall, maybe one asking who someone misses the most, just like an anonymous type of thing every semester just to get people talking.”The idea came from artist Candy Chang and similar walls have gone up around the country and around the world. Bouchard was pleased with the response from the students in Orono. “Pretty much been like this everywhere they’ve done it, but I didn’t think it would be this big on campus because everyone is always hustling and trying to run to class to get things done, I think a lot of people should do more things like this.”Bouchard plans to keep this wall in place until the 18th.
