Flu Outbreaks in Maine Correctional Facilities

Updated 2 years ago

There were outbreaks of the flu last year at the Maine State Prison and the Bolduc Correctional Facility in Warren. That’s according to the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to a report released Thursday, one inmate was seriously ill and another died from the flu in 2011. In total, 46 inmates and staff members were sick. Flu vaccinations are offered to inmates and staff members, but not documented. CDC officials also say without electronic medical records, it’s hard for jails to keep track of who is at high risk for diseases. After the outbreaks, 1,000 inmates and 200 staff members were screened and offered vaccinations.
