A family business went up in flames in East Millinocket on Friday. The town’s fire chief, Les Brown, says crews responded to the Emery Lee and Sons cement plant around 10:30 AM.Brown said the back of the building was already on fire by the time they got on scene. A rubber belt spanning the length of the building was also in flames. The plant’s owners helped fire crews remove important equipment from the building. Crews from Millinocket and Medway helped fight the blaze. The building was destroyed, but no one was hurt. “It’s a total loss, but the big tanks are one of the things that the owner said was most valuable as far as keeping the operation going, so that and the conveyer inside have been saved. They’re going to have to have some work done to them, but they both have been saved,” said Chief Brown.Brown said he believes a wood stove might have started the fire. The state fire marshal’s office will investigate.
