Waterville Catholic Church Holds Last Mass

It was the end of the line for a 137-year-old Waterville church this weekend.Diocese of Portland Bishop Richard Malone was on hand Sunday to celebrate the final Mass at St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic church. The church, which is part of Corpus Christi parish, is being torn down to make way for low-income and elderly housing.Mike Hebert, facilities manager for Corpus Christi Parish, called it a bittersweet day. He told the Morning Sentinel the church was closed due to a shortage of priests and the cost of running the more than 21,000-square-foot church, the adjacent rectory and church hall. The elderly-housing plan needs a final commitment from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the city’s Planning Board.
