Washington County Sheriff Resigns From Maine Sheriff’s Association Over Impending Investigation

Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith has resigned his membership with the Maine Sheriff’s Association.Last week, Sheriff Smith called for Penobscot County Sheriff Glenn Ross to resign from the position of President of the Maine Sheriff’s Association. Smith called for the resignation with claims that Sheriff Ross interfered with a State Police investigation into Reverend Robert Carlson.Carlson was being investigated for alleged child sex abuse crimes.Carlson killed himself just one day after Sheriff Ross told him about the impending investigation. The Maine Sheriff’s Association announced it would conducted an investigation into Sheriff Ross’s actions. But Sheriff Smith says he is now being investigated as well because he spoke out against Sheriff Ross’s actions.Sheriff Smith says he finds it alarming that the Maine Sheriff’s Association is more concerned with protecting it’s own than exposing inappropriate conduct that may have silenced potential victims.
