Shrimp Fishermen Request Increase in Harvest Quota

Shrimp fishermen are requesting an increase in the 2012 harvest quota.Regulators set this year’s catch limit at just a third of what it was last year. But fishermen have put in a request, along with new data, asking for an increased quota and therefore, a longer season. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission said this year’s limit is needed because of smaller shrimp populations, but fishermen believe there are enough shrimp to support their new request. They say thousands of jobs hang in the balance.Regulators will discuss the request at a public meeting on January 19 at Sable Oaks in South Portland. The meeting begins at 9:30 AM.
