Maine 2011 Road Deaths Lowest Since 1959

Motorists are more distracted than ever with cellphones, email and texting. Yet it has been a safe year, relatively speaking, on roads in Maine, New Hampshire and several other states.Officials say the number of highway deaths dipped to the lowest level in more than five decades in Maine and to an all-time low in neighboring New Hampshire in 2011.In Maine, the 136 fatalities recorded through midnight on New Year’s Eve represented the lowest number since 1959, when there were also 136 highway deaths. In New Hampshire, the 87 deaths represented the lowest in the 50 years the state has kept records.Officials cite a number of potential factors, including stepped-up law enforcement, safer cars and public education about distracted and drunken driving.
