Portland Sea Dogs Owner Dan Burke Dies from Diabetes

Portland Sea Dogs owner Dan Burke died today due to complications from type one diabetes. Before baseball, Burke was a titan of the broadcasting industry, eventually becoming CEO of ABC. It was toward the end of his broadcasting career, in the 1980’s when he began pursuing ownership in minor league baseball. He had spent 5 decades summering in Kennebunk, and envisioned baseball working in Portland. In 1992, when major league baseball expanded, he was granted the Marlins Double-A affiliate, the Sea Dogs, which joined the Eastern League in 1994. the rest as they say is history. He was a business man, and a baseball fan, and those two interests helped forge one of baseball’s most succesful enterprises.
