Volunteering was a topic of discussion Tuesday at the University of Maine in Orono. The 25th Annual Blaine House Conference on Volunteerism focused on engaging skilled volunteers, recruitment strategies and fund raising for programs. The goal is to get more people to volunteer, which organizers say is important in this economy.”We had more people going to soup kitchens, more people in the homeless shelters. Volunteers are needed to run these key services to help support our fellow citizens.””It’s all about what you can gain and what you can learn from others and I think that’s the secret.”Judi Stebbins was awarded the first Champion of Service Award from the Maine Commission for Community Service. Stebbins has been volunteering for decades and the honor was a surprise to her. For more information visit volunteermaine.org.
