Mitchell Weighs in on Palestinian Bid for Statehood

Former Middle East peace envoy George Mitchell says Palestinian efforts to gain membership in the United Nations will hurt prospects for peace with Israel in the long run.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has asked the U.N. Security Council to recognize an independent Palestinian stateMitchell told The Associated Press on Sunday that the hostility and mistrust between the Palestinians and Israel will worsen if the U.N. ultimately grants any type of status recognizing a Palestinian state. He said the only way to attain peace in the region is at the negotiating table.The former U.S. senator from Maine served as President Barack Obama’s Middle East peace envoy from 2009 until May.
