Coast Guard Rescue Near Monhegan Island

(WMTW) The Coast Guard is trying to rescue one person on Gull Rock, which is about about a half-mile southeast off Monhegan Island.The Coast Guard is also searching for a missing 32-year-old man who was another ledge and was swept off it by the surf, Lt. Colleen McCusker of the U.S. Coast Guard in South Portland.After the man was swept off the rock, four people tried to swim out after him and ended up on Gull Rock, which is about 500 yards off Monhegan Island. Three of them were able to swim to shore, McCusker said.The Coast Guard is trying to decide whether or not to try an air rescue to bring the remaining person to shore. A 47-foot Coast Guard motor life boat and a Coast Guard helicopter from Cape Cod are at the scene, McCusker said.A Good Samaritan fishing vessel was in the area and is helping with the search for the missing person.The Coast Guard is seeing significant swells in the area caused by Hurricane Katia and rip currents throughout the coast, she said.The incident was reported around 1:40 p.m. Friday.The Coast Guard urges caution for all mariners and shoregoers because of the significant surf caused by the tropical storm, McCusker said.
