Lawmakers Return to Augusta

Updated 3 years ago

After taking a nearly two-week break to let legislative paperwork get caught up and take a break from the intense pace of activity at the State House, the Maine House and Senate are due back this week to complete business for the 2011 session. Lawmakers still have scores of bills on their agenda that are awaiting funding decisions. They must also make final decisions on contentious issues such as charter schools and legalizing fireworks sales, and decide whether to sustain or override vetoed bills, when they return Tuesday. The big work for the year is done, namely passage of a $6.1 billion two-year state budget. Lawmakers also enacted major health insurance overhaul and regulatory reform bills. (AP)
