Bangor Raceway Driver Steve Mahar Retires

One of Bangor Raceway’s greatest drivers is calling it a career. Prescott Rossi caught up with Steve Mahar as he hangs up his reins for the final time.Steve Mahar’s career spanned five decades. He won over $7 million in prize money. Mahar’s final race came last Friday. He’s proud to be leaving on his own terms. Even though his racing days are over, Mahar is not leaving the sport just yet.At 62 years old, Steve Mahar is retiring from driving and beginning a new chapter as a trainer.”My wife wants me to cut back. I’m not if I do or not but I gotta do it at some point and this is probably the best point to do it.”Bangor Raceway has been like another home for Steve Mahar. He’s been a winner there since the early-1980’s.”I’ve had a lot of career milestones here. I think I won my 2000th race here, my 3000th race here and last year, my 5000th. I’ve had luck here every year I’ve been here, never had a bad year so it’s good.”He says he’ll miss the other drivers and the challenge of working with horses. He also has not definitively closed the book on his racing career.”You never know in this game. I’ve been everywhere and done this and done that so, I don’t know. I doubt it, but you never know. The door’s always open.”
