State Restocks Atlantic Charr

Updated 3 years ago

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is restocking Atlantic charr in a remote pond after drastic efforts to restore the native fish.Maine is the only state in the U.S. where the fish is found. Also known as blackwater trout, Atlantic charr is found in 12 waters in Maine.Because it’s rare, the department went all out to save the population on Big Reed Pond after it became overrun with smelt, which were illegally introduced. Eventually, biologists removed remaining Atlantic charr and used a chemical in a last-gasp effort to rid the pond of smelt. On Thursday, Atlantic charr will be restocked in the remote pond. The only access to the pond itself is via a mile-long hiking trail.(The Associated Press)
