Maine and Vermont are the “Oldest States”

Updated 4 years ago

New U.S. Census figures show that Maine and Vermont are the two oldest states state in the country. New Hampshire is fourth. Maine’s median age is 42.7, Vermont, 41.5. Experts say Vermont’s aging population is due to a low birth rate, a relatively modest number of young people moving in and the aging of the Baby Boomer population. Utah is the youngest state with a median age of 29.2. The Burlington Free Press reports experts say the entire country is aging, but the lack of racial diversity in Vermont makes the trend more noticeable because the birth rate among whites is significantly lower than it is for some other ethnic groups.
