Alfond Arena Undergoes Interior Renovations

Updated 3 years ago

The home for UMaine hockey and basketball will look a little different next school year. Alfond Arena will be renovated over the summer. Once again, the Alfond is getting worked on. It’s one more change to a building that over the years has been renovated several times.***The building had modest beginnings. Opened in 1977, it originally held 3,800 people. After a $2 million dollar gift from Harold Alfond, the building that adorns his name added the upper-bowl of seats prior to the 1991-92 school year, increasing the capacity to over 5,200 people. For now, Alfond Arena is without ice and all of the seats from the lower-bowl. A $4.85 million dollar project is underway to make the fan experience more enjoyable to make sure that the athletes that call Alfond Arena home are playing on the best possible surface.Tim Whitehead – Maine Head Coach”I’ve been doing a lot of recruiting and a lot of fund-raising for our Alfond Renovation Project. My goal is to finish that by July 1st. It’s going to look pretty cool in the Alfond.”
