Mainers Speak Out about Social Security

Keep social security strong, that’s what Mainers gathered in front of the Federal Building in Bangor, Friday morning, to urge Senators Snowe and Collins to do.The event, organized by the Maine People’s Alliance, brought current and future social security recipients together. The group says there are troubling discussions taking place in Washington about raising the retirement age and cutting benefits.” It’s a program that has worked very well since inception in the 19-30’s and it can continue to do that well into the future, into the indefinite future if it’s managed responsibly today,” said Elizabeth Johns, a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The group wants a pledge from both senators saying they won’t cut social security benefits.
