The UMaine cheering team is off to the nationals in Daytona, Florida. The Black Bears have practice today and they’ll take the stage tomorrow afternoon. We visited with the team before they left at their final dressed rehersal. Nearly all were high school cheerleaders in Maine.I think its more stressful than in high school where you have numerous competitions before states this is just one nationals. Most of the team has felt the high stakes of high school regionals, but this is even bigger. Its like a high school competition times ten. Its awesome lights everywhere smoke machines its like nothing I’ve ever done before. I love it.Maine will compete in the Small Co-ed category. Fewer than 20 on the floor and up to four guys. And really very little time to size up the competition. The only preview we get of each team is from youtube if we can find them on there or last years performance on the cheering website. Its tougher cause you don’t know what you’re up against. The first goal is to perform at the band shell on the beach on Friday. They’ll have to finish in the top five on Thursday for that opportunity. They’ve worked for months for this one shot.It can be tough to keep yourself motivated throughout the year kinda keep reminding yourself of that light at the end of the tunnel that big goal.
