Planning Office Urges Homeowners to Protect Themselves Against Floods

March and April are the most flood-prone months in Maine. The State Planning Office is urging homeowners to make sure they’re protected against floods, especially those living in floodplains near rivers. The agency says many people think their homeowners or business insurance will cover flood related losses but that’s not the case. It’s estimated that up to 75% of homes and businesses in Maine floodplains are not covered. The agency says renters and owners should contact their insurance agents to see if they need flood insurance. The flood threat is highest when there’s ice on the water combined with spring rains.
