850 Gallons Of Heating Oil Spills After Tanker Rolls Over

Crews from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection were in Vassalboro Tuesday cleaning up an oil spill. It spilled from a tanker truck that rolled over on the Nelson road around 11:30 Monday morning. The DEP’s Peter Blanchard says about 850 gallons of oil spilled into a ditch.Crews were on the scene Tuesday with vacuum trucks, sucking up the oil and water mix.Blanchard says they’ve been trying to keep the oil from spreading into a culvert and moving across the road. “We are concerned potentially there are private drinking water wells for the residences on the road nearby and so most likely we’ll monitor their wells on a quarterly basis just to make sure there’s no impact,” he said. The tanker truck driver was not hurt. Blanchard says they hope to have the oil cleaned up by the end of the week and will continue to monitor the area in the weeks to come.
